Mumbai: KL Rahul has emerged as one of the standout performers for Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League 2026 season, delivering impactful starts at the top of the order as the franchise pushes for a place in the playoffs.
Speaking on JioStar’s Superstars, Rahul reflected on his evolving batting approach, his partnership with Pathum Nissanka, overcoming the perception of being only a Test batter, and how fatherhood has transformed both his life and cricket.
Rahul acknowledged that T20 cricket has changed dramatically in recent years, with teams placing far greater emphasis on dominating the Powerplay. He explained that Delhi Capitals’ management had clearly communicated their expectations before the season, asking him to open the batting with freedom and aggression.
According to Rahul, modern T20 cricket increasingly rewards teams that control the first six overs, with scores of 60 or more in the Powerplay now becoming a benchmark. He said the clarity in his role allowed him to prepare mentally and adapt his game to suit the team’s needs.
The Indian batter admitted that success may not come every match but stressed that the intent to maximise the Powerplay remains central to his approach this season.
Rahul also spoke warmly about his opening partnership with Pathum Nissanka, describing the experience as enjoyable and naturally balanced. He said their conversations largely revolve around maintaining positive intent while playing proper cricketing shots.
The pair, he explained, spend considerable time during training discussing match-ups, scoring options and tactical responses to various bowling situations, including spin attacks during the Powerplay. Rahul added that their focus in the middle is to stay relaxed, challenge themselves and enjoy the contest.
Reflecting on his cricketing journey, Rahul revealed that earlier in his career he was often viewed primarily as a Test specialist and was not considered a strong white-ball player. He said transforming his game across formats and becoming a successful T20 batter is among the achievements he values most.
Rahul admitted there were mistakes and setbacks along the way but said he takes pride in consistently giving his best effort and maintaining perspective through both success and disappointment. He added that he remains motivated to continue improving and competing for trophies.
Discussing teams that have impressed him in IPL 2026, Rahul praised Punjab Kings for building on last season’s performances under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer. He also highlighted the strong performances of defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru and praised Rajasthan Royals for their fast-bowling attack featuring Jofra Archer and Nandre Burger.
However, it was Rahul’s candid reflections on fatherhood that offered the most personal insight. He described becoming a father as the happiest and most peaceful phase of his life, saying it brought a new sense of perspective and emotional balance.
Rahul shared that spending time away from his daughter remains difficult, especially now that she is growing up, talking and becoming more expressive. Yet, he said returning home to her smile, hugs and affection instantly makes him forget the physical and mental challenges of professional cricket.
According to Rahul, fatherhood has also positively impacted his game by helping him stop overthinking on the field.
“That has helped my cricket as well over the last year. I don’t overthink the game anymore, which has made it exciting again,” Rahul said during the conversation on JioStar.
He added that he now approaches cricket with greater freedom and focus, enjoying the game more fully whenever he steps onto the field.
