New Delhi: India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held wide-ranging discussions with United Nations General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock in New Delhi on Tuesday, focusing on multilateral reforms, sustainable development, artificial intelligence, and the evolving situation in West Asia.
Focus on Reforming Global Governance
During the meeting, Jaishankar emphasized the need to reform global governance institutions to better reflect current geopolitical and economic realities. He underlined that countries of the Global South must have a stronger voice in international decision-making.
The discussions also covered the UN’s reform agenda under the UN80 initiative, aimed at modernizing the organization ahead of its 80th anniversary. Jaishankar reiterated that inclusive and representative multilateralism is crucial for effectively addressing contemporary global challenges.
Sustainable Development and Technology in Focus
Both leaders reviewed progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), acknowledging that while advancements have been made, significant gaps remain—particularly in developing nations. They stressed the importance of enhanced international cooperation and equitable access to resources.
Artificial intelligence also featured prominently in the talks. The two sides exchanged views on responsible AI governance, highlighting the need for ethical frameworks, regulatory mechanisms, and careful assessment of its societal impact.
West Asia Situation Discussed
The leaders discussed ongoing tensions in West Asia, stressing the importance of diplomatic engagement and peaceful resolution to prevent further escalation. India reiterated its consistent stance of promoting dialogue and restraint in conflict regions, while both sides called for coordinated global efforts to address humanitarian concerns.
Baerbock’s Visit and Key Engagements
Earlier in the day, Baerbock paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat, marking the start of her official engagements. Her visit, which began on Monday, is part of ongoing India-UN cooperation.

She is scheduled to hold discussions with officials from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology on AI governance and digital policy. Additionally, Baerbock will meet the UN team in India led by Resident Coordinator Stefan Priesner to review development initiatives and collaborative programmes.
Strengthening India-UN Engagement
The visit follows recent high-level engagements, including the February trip of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to New Delhi for a global AI summit.
Baerbock has previously acknowledged India’s growing global role and its capacity to influence international systems. Her engagements are expected to further strengthen both bilateral and multilateral cooperation.
After concluding her India visit, Baerbock is expected to travel to China as part of her broader diplomatic outreach.
The meeting highlighted a shared commitment between India and the United Nations to address complex global issues through dialogue, while pushing for reforms that make global institutions more inclusive, representative, and effective.
