“Hitting sixes isn’t a big deal anymore; finishing matches really matters” – Mukul Choudhary

Lucknow Lucknow Super Giants batter Mukul Choudhary, who has impressed in his debut TATA IPL 2026 season with calmness under pressure and mature match awareness, has spoken about his transition from domestic cricket to the IPL, his approach to chasing targets, and key conversations that have shaped his mindset.

With a string of composed cameos and a standout match-winning knock against Kolkata Knight Riders, Mukul has quickly built a reputation for handling high-pressure situations with remarkable composure for a newcomer. Speaking on JioStar, he reflected on adapting to the demands of top-level cricket and learning the art of finishing games.

On adapting to IPL pressure

Mukul admitted that while the IPL comes with greater visibility and pressure, it also offers better preparation compared to domestic cricket.

He explained that facing known bowlers with access to detailed analysis makes things tactically easier, but the real challenge lies in performing in front of massive crowds and handling expectations.

According to him, staying mentally calm and trusting his processes has been key to managing nerves on the big stage.

On planning his match-winning chase vs KKR

Recalling his approach during the chase against Kolkata Knight Riders, Mukul said he focused on simplicity rather than the final result.

He revealed that his initial plan was to support Ayush Badoni while he was batting well, ensuring he kept strike rotation smooth. After Badoni’s dismissal, with around five overs remaining, Mukul decided to stay till the end and anchor the chase.

He emphasized that he avoided overthinking the situation and instead focused on playing each ball on merit. Even in the tense final overs, his approach remained clear—maximize scoring opportunities without letting pressure dictate decisions.

On his IPL debut mindset

Mukul also shared that he was not initially certain about featuring in his first IPL match against Delhi Capitals.

He recalled being informed late about a possible opportunity and eventually being confirmed in the playing XI. Despite limited preparation, he felt mentally ready due to consistent performances in internal practice games within the squad.

He admitted that while the crowd, cameras, and live broadcast added a new layer of pressure, his overall mindset remained steady as he focused on executing his role.

On Virat Kohli’s advice

One of the most impactful moments for Mukul came during a conversation with Virat Kohli, who praised his finishing ability against KKR and offered valuable guidance.

Mukul shared that Kohli told him modern cricket is no longer just about hitting sixes, as most players can clear the boundary. Instead, the real difference lies in the ability to finish games under pressure.

Kohli emphasised that true batting quality is revealed when wickets are falling, the required rate is rising, and the pressure is at its peak. He advised Mukul to focus on staying calm, controlling innings situations, and consistently closing out matches—an insight Mukul says has stayed with him strongly.

On Urvil Patel’s explosive batting

Reflecting on Urvil Patel’s attacking knock against LSG in Chennai, Mukul described it as a dominant, one-sided display of power hitting.

He admitted that Patel’s ability to clear boundaries at will was impressive and almost seemed effortless. However, he also highlighted the difference in their roles.

While Patel plays a purely aggressive, high-impact role, Mukul sees himself as someone who must build innings and finish games under pressure. Despite the contrast, he said watching such explosive batting motivates him to improve his own finishing skills.

Mukul Choudhary’s early IPL journey reflects a growing maturity—one focused not just on striking boundaries, but on mastering the far more demanding art of finishing matches under pressure.
