Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter Buried After State Funeral in Georgia

Washington: Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, who passed away at the age of 100 on December 29, 2024, in his hometown of Plains, Georgia, was buried following a state funeral and a week of tributes. His passing marked the end of an era for the last member of the Greatest Generation, with many Americans and political figures honoring his legacy.

Carter, who had been under hospice care since February 2023, received a ceremonial send-off in Washington, D.C., with his flag-draped casket lying in state at the U.S. Capitol, where thousands of mourners silently paid their respects. The funeral procession continued with his remains being transported to the National Cathedral in Washington on Thursday for a state burial. President Joe Biden, a lifelong friend of Carter, will deliver the eulogy at the service, as per Carter’s request made during their final reunion four years ago.

Biden described Carter as “a good guy” and spoke about his unique worldview, noting that Carter always viewed the world “from here,” indicating the heart. Former U.S. presidents, including Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Donald Trump, are expected to attend the service. Federal offices will be closed for the national day of mourning.

Carter’s presidency, which was often criticized during his one-term in office, has seen a reassessment over the years. While he struggled politically, especially after losing to Ronald Reagan in 1980, his legacy grew stronger due to his efforts in negotiating the Egypt-Israel peace agreement and his post-presidency humanitarian work. In 2002, Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his contributions to global peace efforts.

Carter’s funeral, meticulously planned and spanning six days, included poignant moments such as the ringing of a bell 39 times at the Plains peanut farm where he grew up. His coffin was then carried to Washington on a gun carriage, escorted by military pallbearers in a solemn display of respect.

Carter will be interred next to his late wife, Rosalynn Carter, in Plains, Georgia. Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer described him as “one of the most decent and humble public servants we have ever seen,” adding that Carter embodied “leadership through service, compassion, and a thirst for justice for all.”

This state funeral marks the end of an era for Carter, who, despite a turbulent political career, is remembered for his commitment to peace, humanitarianism, and public service.
