Bareilly – The Divisional Road Safety Committee meeting, chaired by the Divisional Commissioner, was recently held in the Commissioner’s office auditorium. The session focused on evaluating road safety and accident statistics across Bareilly division.
Comparative Analysis of Road Accidents
During the review of accident statistics from 2019 to 2023, it was noted that while road accidents neither increased nor decreased, the number of vehicles surged by 7.5 lakh during the same period. A closer comparison of 2022 and 2023 data revealed a decline in accidents in Bareilly but a rise in Badaun. Over-speeding, driving in the wrong direction, and the use of mobile phones while driving were identified as the primary causes of accidents.
Addressing Black Spots
Discussions were held on improving identified black spots to reduce accidents. For instance, the construction of an overbridge at Navdiya Jhada in Bareilly requires a no-objection certificate (NOC) from the Forest Department for tree removal. Additionally, measures were proposed to close unauthorized cuts near ANA College and to construct a service road near the Radha Krishna Temple in Fatehganj West, where people often use the wrong side of the road.
Regulating School Vehicles
The Commissioner emphasized strict action to ensure school vehicles operate as per standards. It was noted that despite open permits, applications for school vehicles have not been received, indicating that children are still using unauthorized vehicles. The Additional District Magistrates (ADMs) of all four districts were directed to inspect school transportation during opening and closing hours and take stringent action against unauthorized vehicles transporting students.
The committee also suggested slight variations in the opening and closing times of schools within the same area to alleviate traffic congestion.
Requests from School Bus Association
Representatives of the School Bus Association requested that permits for diesel vehicles also be issued for school transport.
Attendance
The meeting was attended by Additional District Magistrate (Administration) Dinesh, divisional transport officers from all four districts, PWD officials, municipal corporation representatives, and other concerned authorities.
