Bhutan Holds Prayer Rituals in Remembrance of Former Indian PM Manmohan Singh

Thimphu: Bhutan’s King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck led a solemn prayer ceremony at the Kuenrey of Tashichhodzong on Friday to honor the late Dr. Manmohan Singh, former Prime Minister of India. The service was attended by Bhutanese Prime Minister, the Indian Ambassador to Bhutan, and high-ranking officials from both governments.

Similar prayer rituals were conducted across all 20 Dzongkhags, according to a statement shared on Facebook by King Wangchuck. The post noted that “His Majesty The King, His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo, and Their Majesties the Queen Mothers offered Karmi Tongchoed (one thousand butterlamps) in memory of the late former Prime Minister.”

As a mark of respect, Bhutan’s national flags at embassies, missions, and consulates are flying at half-mast.

Dr. Manmohan Singh, who was born on September 26, 1932, served as India’s Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014. Renowned for spearheading economic liberalization as Finance Minister in 1991, Singh modernized India’s economy and strengthened regional cooperation through initiatives such as BRICS. During his tenure, he also enhanced India’s diplomatic relations with global powers.

Singh’s cremation took place near Rajghat, New Delhi, the resting place of many iconic Indian leaders. International leaders and diplomats have recognized his contributions and offered condolences.
