Lucknow: Bhatkhande Sanskriti University, Lucknow, organised a large-scale tree plantation drive on Sunday under the Uttar Pradesh Government’s flagship environmental initiative, Mission Chhaya, reaffirming its commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable development.
The programme was inaugurated by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Mandavi Singh, who planted the first sapling and urged the university community to actively contribute to creating a greener future. The event was held under the inspiring theme, “Rise, Join Hands, Plant a Tree in Your Mother’s Name,” encouraging individuals to associate environmental protection with a personal sense of responsibility and gratitude.
Addressing the gathering, Prof. Singh described Mission Chhaya as a significant initiative aimed at expanding the state’s green cover and restoring ecological balance. She said tree plantation is not only essential for conserving nature but also for ensuring a cleaner, healthier and safer environment for future generations. She encouraged students, faculty and staff to plant more trees and take responsibility for their long-term care.
As part of the campaign, the Vice-Chancellor had distributed saplings of environmentally beneficial species, including neem, guava, mango, fig and Indian gooseberry (amla), to teachers, employees and students on July 11, motivating them to plant the saplings during the university’s plantation drive on July 12. Participants enthusiastically planted the saplings across the campus, transforming the initiative into a collective environmental effort.

Registrar Sushil Kumar Singh emphasised that tree plantation should not remain a one-day activity but become an ongoing commitment. He said Mission Chhaya provides an opportunity for everyone to play an active role in environmental protection and stressed that regular maintenance of the planted saplings is equally important to ensure they grow into healthy trees that provide shade, clean air and ecological benefits for generations.
Faculty members, administrative staff and students from various departments participated enthusiastically in the programme and pledged to contribute towards maintaining a greener, cleaner and more environmentally conscious campus.
The university described the plantation drive as a successful and inspiring initiative that reflects its dedication to environmental sustainability while supporting the Uttar Pradesh Government’s broader mission to increase green cover across the state.
