Against All Odds: Premature Twin Babies Thrive After Advanced NICU Care in Lucknow

Lucknow: In a remarkable display of medical excellence and coordinated care, Vivekananda Polyclinic & Institute of Medical Sciences has successfully treated extremely premature twin babies born at just 28 weeks of gestation, giving them a new lease on life after a challenging start.

Describing the achievement, Swami Muktinathananda said, “The successful treatment of extremely premature twin babies at Vivekananda Polyclinic & Institute of Medical Sciences stands as a testament to the dedication, expertise, and advanced medical facilities of our healthcare team.”

The twins were delivered on February 17, 2026, weighing only 700 grams and 900 grams respectively—placing them in the category of extremely low birth weight infants. Their parents, aged 44 and 45, had long struggled with infertility and were able to conceive through IVF under the expert guidance of Dr. Seema Pandey at the institute.

Complications arose at 28 weeks when the mother went into preterm labour. A safe and timely delivery was carried out by obstetrician and gynecologist Dr. Sonika Gaur. Immediately after birth, both newborns were shifted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), where they required critical support.

Facing severe respiratory distress due to underdeveloped lungs, the babies were placed on ventilator support and administered surfactant therapy—a crucial intervention for premature infants. Over the course of 60 days, they received round-the-clock monitoring, intensive medical care, and specialized nutrition in the NICU.

According to neonatologist Dr. Sachin Verma, the twins have now made a complete recovery and were discharged in stable condition, each weighing over 2 kilograms. He highlighted that babies born at 28 weeks with a birth weight under 1000 grams face up to a 50% risk of mortality and are vulnerable to multiple complications, making this recovery a significant medical milestone.

The babies were cared for under the supervision of Dr. Sachin Verma and Dr. Taruna Vijayvargiya, whose expertise and vigilant care played a pivotal role in ensuring a positive outcome.

Dr. Verma also acknowledged the leadership of Swami Muktinathananda, noting that the institute’s Level-3A NICU facilities enable it to handle critical neonatal cases with advanced medical support. He further commended the contributions of Dr. Seema Pandey and Dr. Sonika Gaur in helping couples achieve parenthood through assisted reproductive technologies.

Reiterating the institution’s commitment to excellence, Swami Muktinathananda said, “Born at just 28 weeks, these fragile newborns have overcome critical challenges and, after 60 days of intensive care in the NICU, have embarked on a healthy life journey. This achievement reflects the exceptional skill of our doctors.”

He added that the successful management of such high-risk cases underscores the importance of timely intervention, advanced IVF treatment, and world-class neonatal care—including ventilator support and surfactant therapy.

The case stands as an inspiring example of how modern medicine, combined with dedicated teamwork, can transform even the most critical situations into stories of hope and survival.
