Bareilly: Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Rohilkhand University is helping students explore international academic and cultural opportunities through its Mandarin Chinese language course, which introduces them to the structure, history and cultural significance of Chinese script alongside practical language skills.
The course is offered by the university’s Centre for Excellence in Multilingualism under the guidance of Taiwanese Mandarin language instructor Chiali Chen. Students learn how Chinese characters are formed, the prescribed sequence for writing them and the cultural traditions associated with the script. Practical demonstrations, regular writing exercises and engaging cultural examples make the learning process interactive.
Through characters such as 山 (shān, mountain), 日 (rì, sun) and 月 (yuè, moon), students are exploring the connections between ancient Chinese writing traditions and nature. Regular practice is also helping them develop confidence, concentration, patience and observational skills.
Prof. Anita Tyagi, Dean of the Faculty of Linguistics and coordinator of the multilingual centre, said the Mandarin course has been running since 2023 and is attracting growing interest. She noted that foreign-language proficiency can create opportunities in international education, cultural exchange and employment. Several university students have also secured scholarships to pursue advanced Mandarin studies in Taiwan.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Anil Kumar Rai said the initiative aims to strengthen academic and cultural ties between India and Taiwan while expanding opportunities for international collaboration and student exchange.
The programme reflects the university’s efforts to promote multilingual education, intercultural understanding and international academic cooperation, equipping students with skills to explore opportunities beyond national boundaries.
