Discipline, Compassion and Human Values Are Essential in Medical Education: Dr. Santosh Kumar Verma

Newly Admitted MBBS Students Oriented on Academic System, Hospital Functioning and Anti-Ragging Rules

Gonda : An orientation programme for first-year MBBS students was organised on Tuesday at the Autonomous State Medical College, Gonda. During the programme, held at Lecture Theatre-1 of the college, Principal Professor Dr. Santosh Kumar Verma briefed the newly admitted students on the importance of medical education, the dignity of the medical profession, discipline and human values. He emphasised that bookish knowledge alone is not sufficient to become a competent doctor; sensitivity towards patients, ethical conduct, regular study and a spirit of service are equally important.

The programme aimed to familiarise newly admitted students with the academic, administrative and clinical functioning of the college and help them adjust to the new academic environment. Senior faculty members associated with medical education, senior and junior resident doctors, and administrative staff were present on the occasion.

Discipline and Regular Studies Are the Keys to Success

Addressing the students, Principal Dr. Santosh Kumar Verma said that medical education is a challenging journey that comes with significant responsibilities. To succeed in this field, students must maintain regular study habits, make effective use of their time, actively participate in classes and follow the guidance of their teachers. He advised them to maintain a healthy balance between their academic responsibilities and personal lives so that they could remain mentally well and perform effectively in their studies.

The Principal also familiarised the students with the college’s academic system, the roles of various departments and the functioning of the attached hospital, particularly its patient treatment services. He said that the true purpose of medical education is to develop not only knowledge and clinical skills but also the right attitude to ensure better treatment and appropriate medical advice for patients in the future.

Compassion Towards Patients Is Essential

The Principal explained that a doctor’s behaviour is closely connected with a patient’s treatment experience and trust. Therefore, every patient must be treated with respect, their concerns must be heard carefully, their privacy must be protected, and ethical standards of medical practice must be followed.

He encouraged the students to consider teamwork, professional conduct and human values integral components of medical education. He motivated them to work towards becoming responsible, compassionate and competent doctors in the future.

He further emphasised the importance of continuous learning in the medical profession. Students were encouraged to learn from the experience of senior faculty members, make effective use of the available academic resources and participate in the educational and co-curricular activities organised by the college.

Students Advised to Avoid Ragging and Follow College Rules

During the programme, students were briefed on the rules and regulations governing residence in the college hostel. The Principal instructed them to maintain discipline on the college campus and stay completely away from prohibited activities such as ragging.

He also provided information about anti-ragging provisions, the complaint redressal mechanism and the arrangements available to ensure students’ safety and well-being.

He emphasised that every student must be provided with a safe, respectful and positive learning environment within the college. Students were advised not to engage in any inappropriate activity and to use the prescribed complaint mechanism if they encountered any such situation.

Best Wishes for a Bright Future : principal

At the conclusion of the programme, the Principal extended his best wishes to all newly admitted students as they embarked on their journey in medical education. He expressed hope that they would pursue their studies with discipline, dedication, ethical values and a spirit of service, and make a meaningful contribution to the medical profession in the future.

He wished them a bright future, excellent academic achievements and success in developing into compassionate and competent medical professionals.

The orientation programme served as an important initiative to familiarise students with the college’s academic environment and help them understand the responsibilities of the medical profession, the importance of discipline and the need for a humane approach towards patients.
