Agartala: In a major step toward strengthening India’s border security architecture, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday announced that the government’s ambitious “Smart Border Project” is in its final stages of preparation and will be implemented soon.
Addressing personnel of the Border Security Force (BSF) at the Lankamura Border Outpost in Tripura, Shah said the new security framework will integrate advanced surveillance technologies with ground-level intelligence and administrative coordination to effectively curb infiltration, human trafficking, arms smuggling, and narcotics trade along India’s borders.
He emphasized that the government’s vision goes beyond traditional fencing and physical barriers, aiming instead to build a comprehensive, technology-driven “security grid” capable of real-time monitoring and rapid response.
Technology-Driven Border Security System
Shah said the Smart Border Project will deploy modern surveillance systems, integrated command networks, and coordinated operational mechanisms linking security forces with local administrative units. The system is designed to improve situational awareness in sensitive border areas and enable faster action against illegal cross-border activities.
He added that the concept will initially be implemented as a pilot project at 7 to 8 locations across the country before being expanded nationwide based on performance and field assessment.
The Home Minister also instructed senior officials, including the Home Secretary and Director General of the Border Security Force, to undertake field visits to border regions to study local conditions and refine implementation strategies.
Multi-Layered Security Approach
Highlighting the complexity of India’s border challenges, Shah said that different border regions face different threats—ranging from human trafficking and arms smuggling to narcotics and counterfeit currency networks. He praised BSF personnel for their continuous efforts in managing these risks under difficult conditions.
According to him, the Smart Border initiative will create a multi-layered security system where surveillance technology, field intelligence, and administrative coordination work in unison.
He stressed that border security cannot be ensured by security forces alone. District Magistrates, Superintendents of Police, village heads, and other local administrative stakeholders will be actively integrated into the system to strengthen enforcement and intelligence sharing at the grassroots level.
Administrative Integration Key to Success
Shah underlined that without active participation from local administration, achieving fully secure borders would not be possible. He said the success of the initiative depends on seamless coordination between central agencies and state-level administrative machinery.

He further stated that the government is working to institutionalize this integrated approach to ensure sustained monitoring and faster response mechanisms in border districts.
Link to National Development Goals
The Home Minister connected the initiative to India’s broader national vision of becoming a developed nation by 2047. He said securing borders from illegal infiltration and cross-border crime is essential for both national security and economic growth.
He specifically highlighted threats such as fake currency circulation, drug trafficking, and illegal migration, stating that controlling such activities is critical to maintaining internal stability and supporting long-term development goals.
Infrastructure Upgrades Along Borders
Shah also provided updates on ongoing infrastructure improvements along India’s border regions. He said that approximately 650 kilometers of existing fencing are being modernized, while 119 kilometers of new fencing have already been approved in the first phase.
In addition, several welfare and infrastructure projects for border personnel—including electricity supply systems, renewable energy installations, and safe drinking water facilities—have already been completed in multiple locations.
Focus on Sensitive International Borders
Reiterating the urgency of the initiative, Shah said that the government is accelerating efforts to deploy the Smart Border system along critical international boundaries, particularly the approximately 6,000-kilometer stretch shared with Pakistan and Bangladesh.
He stated that advanced surveillance and integrated monitoring systems will play a crucial role in preventing infiltration, smuggling, and demographic manipulation attempts along these borders.
Strategic Security Vision
Shah concluded that the Smart Border Project represents a long-term transformation in India’s border management strategy, shifting from conventional guarding methods to a modern, intelligence-led, technology-enabled framework.
He said the initiative will significantly enhance India’s ability to detect, deter, and neutralize cross-border threats while ensuring stronger coordination between security agencies and administrative bodies at all levels.
