Lucknow: In response to the rising temperatures and increasing risk of heatwaves across Uttar Pradesh, the Yogi Adityanath government has introduced comprehensive safety measures in schools to protect students’ health and well-being.
The state’s Basic and Secondary Education Departments have rolled out special guidelines across all schools, focusing on heatwave prevention, health monitoring, and nutritional support. The initiative aims to ensure that schools function not only as centres of learning but also as safe spaces for children during extreme weather conditions.
Mid-Day Meal System Strengthened for Health Protection
A key aspect of the reform is the strengthening of the Mid-Day Meal (MDM) scheme, which has now been closely linked with nutritional security during the summer months. Authorities are ensuring that children receive balanced meals designed to help them cope with heat stress and maintain hydration levels.
The government has emphasized that the MDM system is no longer just a food distribution programme but a critical component of child health protection in schools.
Essential Medicines and First Aid Kits in Schools
To strengthen on-ground preparedness, the Health Department has been directed to ensure the availability of essential medical supplies in all schools and nearby health centres. These include:
- ORS (Oral Rehydration Solution)
- Glucose and electrolyte solutions
- Iron tablets
- First aid kits
Iron supplementation has been specifically structured for different age groups:
- Class 1–5 students: Pink iron tablets
- Class 6–8 students: Blue iron tablets
Teachers have also been instructed to assist in ensuring timely distribution and monitoring of dosage to students.

Data-Driven Heatwave Response Strategy
With temperatures in several districts crossing 44°C, the state government has adopted a data-based strategy to manage heatwave risks effectively. The State Disaster Management Authority has issued detailed guidelines based on historical temperature patterns and heatwave trends.
Teachers and school authorities have been sensitised using analytical data on past temperature fluctuations to better understand the severity of the situation. Regular monitoring and district-level reviews have been made mandatory to ensure strict compliance and quick response in case of emergencies.
Guidelines Issued for Students and Schools
The government has issued detailed safety advisories for students and schools, including:
- Avoid outdoor exposure between 12 PM and 3 PM
- Drink adequate water, ORS, and fluids regularly
- Wear light, loose, and cotton clothing
- Cover head with cap or cloth while going out
- Avoid strenuous physical activities and outdoor sports during peak heat
- Seek immediate medical attention in case of dizziness, weakness, or vomiting
- Ensure shaded areas and safe drinking water facilities in schools
Focus on Health and Safety of Children
Officials stated that the initiative prioritizes the health and safety of students during extreme summer conditions. Schools have been instructed to adjust schedules and activities in line with heatwave conditions, ensuring minimal exposure to high temperatures.
The government is also continuously reviewing the situation at the district level to ensure that all safety measures are effectively implemented without lapses.
With climate conditions becoming increasingly severe, Uttar Pradesh’s proactive measures reflect a strong commitment to safeguarding schoolchildren. By combining nutrition support, medical preparedness, and real-time monitoring, the state aims to build a robust system to tackle heatwave challenges effectively while ensuring uninterrupted education in a safe environment.
