Chabutra Theatre: Transforming Rural Mindsets Through Dialogue in Lucknow’s Kotwa

Lucknow (BKT): In the rural heartland of Kotwa on the outskirts of Lucknow, a quiet yet powerful social transformation is taking root. An innovative initiative titled ‘Chabutra Theatre Pathshala’, led by Mother Seva Sansthan, is empowering village youth to rethink their future through open dialogue and community engagement.

At a recently organized ‘Yuva Samvaad’ (Youth Dialogue), adolescents and young adults from the village gathered in an informal setting to openly discuss their challenges, aspirations, and responsibilities. What emerged was not just conversation—but a collective resolve to bring meaningful change to their society.

Youth Unite Against Social Evils

The dialogue revolved around three pressing concerns: substance abuse, the importance of education, and the eradication of child marriage. Participants candidly acknowledged how addiction is steadily eroding the foundation of their community. In a strong show of commitment, many youths pledged to stay away from intoxicants and actively spread awareness among peers and family members.

Equally significant was their stand against child marriage—a deep-rooted social issue. The young voices resonated with clarity and conviction, emphasizing that such practices have no place in a progressive society.

Education as the Key to Change

A central theme of the discussion was the transformative power of education. Speakers highlighted that learning is the most effective tool to break the cycle of poverty and backwardness. Despite difficult circumstances, the youth motivated one another to remain committed to their studies and strive for a better future.

The Power of Open Dialogue

What sets the ‘Chabutra Theatre Pathshala’ apart is its simplicity and accessibility. Held under the shade of a tree on a village platform (chabutra), the initiative creates a safe and open space for expression. Here, young individuals are encouraged to voice their opinions without hesitation, fostering confidence and critical thinking.

The session revealed a striking shift in mindset—these youths no longer wish to remain passive observers. Instead, they are determined to become active changemakers within their community.

A Model for Grassroots Change

The efforts of Mother Seva Sansthan demonstrate that impactful change does not require grand infrastructure. Sometimes, a simple gathering space and meaningful conversation are enough to ignite a social revolution.

As enthusiasm grows among participants, there is renewed hope that Kotwa in BKT will move towards a future that is addiction-free, educated, and socially aware.
