Lucknow — In a major achievement in advanced neurological care, Apollomedics Hospital, Lucknow, has successfully performed a complex epilepsy surgery on a 31-year-old woman suffering from refractory (drug-resistant) epilepsy, offering renewed hope to patients with long-standing seizure disorders.
The patient had been experiencing recurrent seizures since childhood and had consulted several specialists over the years. Despite prolonged and escalating anti-seizure medication, her condition remained uncontrolled, leading to additional health complications.
A detailed evaluation was carried out under the supervision of Dr. Praveen Sharma, Director Neurologist, using advanced diagnostic tools including MRI brain imaging, video EEG monitoring, PET-CT scanning, and comprehensive neuropsychological assessments. The findings were reviewed by the hospital’s dedicated Epilepsy Clinic, which follows a multidisciplinary decision-making model.
The expert panel included neurologists Dr. Praveen Sharma, Dr. Gopal Podwal, and Dr. Pradeep; neurosurgeons led by Dr. Chhitij Srivastava, Director and Head of Neurosurgery, along with Dr. Saurabh Verma, Dr. Akhilesh, and Dr. Diwakar; and radiologist Dr. Shuchi. After extensive discussion, the team identified the seizure-originating area in the right superior temporal gyrus of the brain.
Subsequently, Dr. Chhitij Srivastava performed a right-sided mini-craniotomy, using continuous intraoperative electrocorticography to accurately locate and remove the epileptogenic tissue while preserving surrounding brain structures. The removed tissue was sent for further analysis.

Dr. Kavita Somani, Director of Pathology, confirmed the diagnosis as Type-2 cortical dysplasia, a well-known cause of drug-resistant epilepsy. The patient recovered smoothly and was discharged on the fourth postoperative day, with a marked reduction in her medication requirements.
Commenting on the success, Dr. Chhitij Srivastava said that epilepsy surgery requires precision and close coordination across specialties, adding that the integrated clinic approach enables optimal outcomes for patients who do not respond to conventional treatments.
Hospital officials stated that this successful surgery further establishes Apollomedics Hospital Lucknow as a leading centre for advanced epilepsy care, providing specialised treatment options to patients from Uttar Pradesh and neighbouring regions.
