Mumbai: Junglee Pictures’ courtroom drama HAQ, featuring Yami Gautam Dhar and Emraan Hashmi, continues to generate strong buzz following its Netflix release, after a well-received theatrical run. The film has earned appreciation from audiences and critics alike, and has now drawn glowing praise from filmmaker Karan Johar.
Taking to social media, Karan Johar shared a heartfelt note after watching the film, describing it as deeply moving and empowering. He revealed that the story left him emotional, saying he was “speechless” by the end and applauded the film wholeheartedly, adding that he regretted not watching it on the big screen.

Johar was particularly effusive in his praise for Yami Gautam Dhar, calling her performance “brilliant, outstanding, and pathbreaking.” He noted that her restrained silences, expressive gaze, final monologue, and unwavering presence throughout the film showcased exceptional craft and conviction. Declaring himself a lifelong admirer, he saluted the actress for delivering one of the most moving performances he has seen in years.
The filmmaker also applauded director Suparn S Varma for handling the subject with sensitivity and control. He highlighted that the film avoids unnecessary theatrics, allowing emotions and character strength to take centre stage through powerful silences and understated storytelling.

Emraan Hashmi too received high praise, with Johar describing HAQ as the actor’s “career best” performance. He commended Hashmi for convincingly portraying an entitled and insensitive husband, noting that the character evokes strong dislike—which, according to him, is precisely what makes the performance so effective.
HAQ is inspired by a landmark Supreme Court judgment and follows the journey of Shazia Bano, portrayed by Yami Gautam Dhar, as she fights a legal battle for justice against her husband, Abbas, played by Emraan Hashmi. The film also stars debutant Vartika Singh along with seasoned performers Sheeba Chaddha, Danish Hussain, and Aseem Hattangady.
Written by Reshu Nath and directed by Suparn S Varma, the film delves into issues such as Triple Talaq, the Uniform Civil Code, and gender equality before the law. Produced by Junglee Pictures in association with Insomnia Films and Baweja Studios, HAQ is currently streaming on Netflix and continues to spark discussion for its socially relevant narrative and strong performances.
