Lucknow: A deeply engaging and evocative session unfolded at the Metaphor Literature Festival as noted litterateur Yatindra Mishra and critic Satya Saran came together for an insightful discussion on the personality and creative legacy of legendary poet, lyricist and filmmaker Gulzar.
Sharing his personal journey, Yatindra Mishra spoke about how Gulzar’s encouragement inspired him to write a book on the maestro, a process that allowed him to closely understand the many dimensions of Gulzar’s life and work. Describing the essence of being “Gulzar,” Mishra said that the poet has an extraordinary ability to create a complete “Sheeshamahal” (palace of mirrors) from fragments, weaving together moments, emotions and experiences into a holistic artistic vision.
Satya Sharan highlighted the magic of Gulzar’s writing style, dwelling on the simplicity, humility and deep sense of respect that define both his work and his personality. He noted that Gulzar’s words carry an understated power that resonates across generations.
Adding an emotional layer to the session, Kanak Rekha Chauhan recited Gulzar’s poignant poem written after the death of Jagjit Singh’s son. The poem, with its seamless blend of Hindi and English words, brought out the depth of grief and sensitivity, leaving the audience visibly moved.

The discussion also referenced the iconic song “Is Mod Se Jaate Hain,” with speakers recalling how Gulzar felt his words had attained immortality upon hearing them rendered in Lata Mangeshkar’s voice. The moment underscored the belief that an artist searches not only for words, but also for a voice fragrant enough to carry their soul.
Concluding the session, the speakers reflected that every poem begins as a blank page, ultimately completed by the reader’s own thoughts and interpretations—reaffirming Gulzar’s enduring ability to invite readers and listeners into his creative universe.
