Lucknow: In a major breakthrough, the Mohanlalganj police have arrested five accused involved in an attempted deadly attack on a journalist in Uttar Pradesh’s capital. The police have also seized a Mahindra Thar, Tata Safari, and Maruti Celerio, allegedly used in the crime. Action has been taken against all five under peace-disturbance provisions, and further investigation is underway.
The incident had sparked panic in the area, with local residents alarmed by reports of firing and a high-speed chase.
The Incident
According to the complaint, victim Mukesh Dwivedi, a resident of Mohanlalganj, was returning from a service centre with his colleague Himanshu Rawat in a Scorpio vehicle on Thursday evening. Around 5:40 pm, as they approached BCC Heights, three cars allegedly tried to deliberately ram their vehicle.
Dwivedi stated that the accused continued to chase them, firing in the air, abusing them, and issuing death threats. Terrified, the journalist immediately alerted the police and provided the registration number of one of the vehicles.
Accused Identified Through CCTV Network
After the attack, all the accused fled the scene. Police registered a case against unidentified individuals and began a detailed investigation.
A massive exercise was launched in which 60–70 CCTV cameras—from PGI to the crime spot—were examined. This extensive footage helped the police identify the three vehicles and the individuals involved.
Those arrested have been identified as:
- Harinam alias Rahul
- Chandan Bhatt
- Amit Mishra
- Vineet Tiwari
- Abhishek Tiwari
All three vehicles allegedly used in the chase were seized during the raids.
Mastermind Identified as Local Leader
During interrogation, it emerged that Abhishek Tiwari, a regional political leader, is the chief conspirator behind the attack. Police sources revealed that he orchestrated the incident due to an old rivalry. The victim had supported the opposing side in a previous case, which angered Abhishek and led him to plan the assault.
Panic in the Area, Police Action Praised
The sight of armed men in luxury vehicles chasing and firing created an atmosphere of fear among residents.
However, the swift action by Mohanlalganj police—leading to the arrest of all five accused—has been widely appreciated.
Further interrogation and legal proceedings are in progress, and police are investigating whether more individuals were involved in the conspiracy.
