Varanasi Witnesses 34.85% Rise in Foreign Tourist Footfall in 2024 Compared to 2023

Over 2 crore increase in total domestic and international tourist numbers in a year; Transformation in Kashi’s economy and image in full swing

Varanasi: Kashi continues to charm the world, with 2024 witnessing a remarkable 34.85% increase in the number of foreign tourists compared to 2023. Overall, the city recorded a surge of 20,624,117 domestic and foreign tourists in just one year, underlining Varanasi’s fast-growing stature on the global tourism map.

Once seen as a city steeped solely in religious and cultural tradition, Varanasi—branded as “Brand Banaras”—has undergone a major transformation in the last eight years under the Yogi Adityanath-led government. A city that didn’t see major development in eight decades has been reshaped in less than one.

According to the Tourism Department, the total number of domestic and international visitors in 2023 stood at 89,473,626, which increased to 110,097,743 in 2024. Deputy Director of Tourism Rajendra Kumar Rawat stated that this marks an overall 18.73% growth in tourist arrivals.

Key Highlights:

  • Foreign Tourist Growth:
    From 201,897 in 2023 to 309,932 in 2024 — an increase of 108,035 tourists, translating to a 34.85% rise.

  • Domestic Tourist Growth:
From 89,271,729 in 2023 to 109,787,811 in 2024 — an increase of 20,516,082 tourists, marking an 18.68% growth.

  • Total Tourist Increase:
Combined, there was a 20,624,117 tourist increase year-on-year.

The rejuvenation of Kashi Vishwanath Corridor, improved law and order, and enhanced connectivity—whether by road, rail, or air—have played a pivotal role in attracting tourists. Modern infrastructure and renovated ghats with better cleanliness and facilities have made Varanasi not just a pilgrimage destination but also a global cultural hotspot.

Officials also attribute the rise in foreign arrivals to better promotion of Varanasi on international platforms, as well as the spiritual curiosity that the city stirs across the globe.

With this rising influx of tourists, there has been a significant shift in the local economy as well. The increased tourist footfall has generated more opportunities for local businesses, handicrafts, hospitality, and transport, impacting Varanasi and adjoining districts positively.

The cultural richness of Varanasi, now married with modern amenities, is ensuring that the city remains not just timeless but also increasingly global.
