Bangladesh voices protest as RG Kar Hospital issue picks steam

Dhaka: Students of Dhaka University in Bangladesh  protested in support of the ongoing demonstrations against the rape and murder of a female trainee doctor at Kolkata’s R.G. KAR Medical College. The protest was organized under the banner of “Awaaz Tolo Nari” (women, raise your voice). The protest was held near the Raju statue of Dhaka University.

What did the students say?

During the protest, Rahnuma Ahmed Nirat, a student of the Department of Physics of Dhaka University, said, “We are well aware of the non-cooperative attitude of the R.G. KAR Medical College administration. As a woman, our only demand is that the administration should provide full legal assistance and ensure justice as soon as possible.”

Talking about this, Anya, a student of the Department of Anthropology, said that women are facing rape all over the world. We fully support the ongoing movement for fair accountability in the case of Kolkata’s R.G. KAR Hospital. Also, we demand a public hearing in the rape and murder case of Sohgi Jahan Tonu in Comilla, especially when the army is involved. The government should ensure a safe country for women through this mass movement of students.”

Lamisha Jahan, a student of Jahangirnagar University, said, “In past rape cases, the names of the victims are often made public, while the names of the culprits are often hidden. Many times these cases are suppressed by the government or the ruling party. Now the days of silence are over. We have to raise our voice against all kinds of humiliating incidents against women.”

Anika Arfin Anu, a student of the Finance Department, said that we have to make a safe country for women. Students have played an important role in the mass movement, and we have to force our government to take action in all rape cases and ensure the safety of women.
