Pranav Mittal’s ‘Artisans of Lucknow’ Evolves into National Initiative ‘Artisans of India’

Lucknow: What began as a grassroots effort to support local craftsmen has now grown into a nationwide movement, as student entrepreneur Pranav Mittal expands his initiative ‘Artisans of Lucknow’ into ‘Artisans of India (Bharat Ke Karigar)’.

The initiative aims to address long-standing structural challenges faced by traditional artisans, particularly those engaged in heritage crafts like chikankari and zardozi. For years, these craftsmen have struggled with limited financial literacy, restricted access to broader markets, and heavy reliance on intermediaries—factors that have constrained their income and growth.

Built on extensive primary research, the project identifies these systemic gaps and converts them into targeted interventions at the grassroots level. A major focus has been on conducting structured workshops that go beyond awareness, equipping artisans with practical skills such as financial management, pricing strategies, and the use of digital platforms. These efforts are designed to help artisans adapt to evolving market demands and improve their livelihoods.

A key milestone in the initiative’s journey has been the formation of a cooperative of chikankari artisans in Lucknow. This collective model enhances bargaining power, promotes collaboration, and ensures better financial security for artisans through shared learning and resources.

The initiative has also expanded its reach by collaborating with grassroots organisations and individuals across different states. This network-driven approach allows the model to be implemented in diverse regional contexts while maintaining its community-focused foundation.

One of the defining strengths of ‘Artisans of India’ lies in its scalability. Through structured toolkits and strategic partnerships, the framework has been successfully adapted beyond its original base in Lucknow, enabling expansion without diluting impact.

The project has gained recognition on national platforms, highlighting the growing role of youth-led, research-driven initiatives in addressing grassroots economic challenges.

As ‘Artisans of India (Bharat Ke Karigar)’ continues to grow, it represents more than the preservation of traditional crafts. It signals a shift towards integrating heritage industries into the modern economy—ensuring artisans are not only sustained but empowered to thrive.

From a local initiative to a scalable national movement, the journey underscores how innovation, when combined with purpose and effective execution, can create meaningful and lasting change.
