Mumbai: Punjab Kings’ playoff hopes suffered another major setback after a thrilling defeat to Mumbai Indians in Dharamsala, marking their fifth consecutive loss in the TATA IPL 2026. Speaking on JioHotstar’s Google Search AI Mode Match Centre Live, former South African cricketer Mark Boucher and ex-India spinner Piyush Chawla analysed Punjab’s struggles, Mumbai’s match-winning chase, and the road ahead for PBKS.
Piyush Chawla said Punjab Kings are now under immense pressure, especially after beginning the season strongly. He pointed out that the team’s bowling unit, particularly the overseas fast bowlers, has failed to deliver consistently. According to Chawla, Marco Jansen and Xavier Bartlett have struggled to maintain control after the new-ball phase, making it difficult for PBKS to defend big totals or contain aggressive batting sides in high-scoring games.
He also praised the composed partnership between Tilak Varma and Will Jacks during Mumbai Indians’ chase. Chawla noted that both batters relied on proper timing and solid technique rather than unnecessary aggression, which proved highly effective in Dharamsala conditions where the ball travels quickly due to the altitude.
Mark Boucher highlighted key moments that shifted momentum in Mumbai’s favour. He said Punjab showed intent and energy in the field but failed to capitalise during crucial phases. Boucher especially pointed to Marco Jansen’s expensive over, saying the pacer missed the ideal hard-length areas that were difficult to score against on that surface.

Discussing PBKS’ playoff chances, Boucher said the team now needs a mental reset. He suggested that Punjab Kings should adopt a fearless approach in their remaining matches instead of focusing too heavily on qualification pressure. According to him, playing with freedom and confidence could help the side rediscover momentum in the closing stages of the tournament.
