Kolkata: The mother of the woman doctor who was raped and murdered at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene and ensure justice for her daughter. She expressed her desire to meet the Prime Minister, questioning the state of women’s safety in West Bengal while speaking on International Women’s Day.
“I want to meet the Prime Minister and request him to intervene in this case. It has been seven months since my daughter left us, yet where is justice? We don’t even have her death certificate. If a woman doctor is not safe at her workplace, where can she be safe?” she lamented.
Reacting to her plea, BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul said, “There is a process to request a meeting with the Prime Minister. I am sure he will grant her an audience and listen to her appeal.”
Trinamool Congress leader and West Bengal Finance Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya responded, “In this country, anyone has the right to request a meeting with the Prime Minister. However, we must not forget that it was our leader, Mamata Banerjee, who took the first step and ensured the arrest of the accused.”
The case saw a verdict from the Sealdah Court on January 20, sentencing Kolkata Police civic volunteer Sanjay Roy to life imprisonment until death.
Earlier, the victim’s parents had sought a meeting with President Droupadi Murmu via email. However, the President’s office cited scheduling constraints, making the meeting impossible. Following this, they met with the Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) at its headquarters in Delhi.
The victim’s father expressed his frustration, saying, “Look at the situation we are in. The President should have come forward to meet us, but instead, we received a reply on February 26 (Wednesday) stating that she has no time. I am a citizen of this country, yet it feels like the President does not acknowledge me. It is heartbreaking.”
They had also sought meetings with the Prime Minister and the Home Minister. On February 27, they traveled to New Delhi and reiterated their demand for justice in a meeting with CBI Director Praveen Sood. The victim’s father said, “We discussed the steps taken by the CBI during the investigation and the verdict of the Sealdah Court. We also requested the swift delivery of justice for my daughter. Additionally, we shared concerns regarding the absence of her death certificate, which has not yet been issued.”
