Michael Clarke and Aaron Finch Reflect on Virat Kohli’s Struggles

Mumbai: In the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, former Australia captain Michael Clarke has praised the Australian team, led by Pat Cummins, for their disciplined approach in restricting Virat Kohli’s impact with the bat. Clarke noted that the Australian bowlers have executed a well-defined strategy, targeting Kohli’s weakness of chasing deliveries outside the off-stump, which has resulted in him being dismissed six times in the series.

Kohli’s performances have been underwhelming, with scores of 7, 11, 3, 36, and 5 in the series, except for a match-saving century in the second innings of the Perth Test. Clarke remarked that Kohli thrives when he plays the ball late and plays it with confidence, but the Australian bowlers, particularly Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc, have used the delivery outside off stump to get Kohli out. Despite the challenges, Clarke acknowledged that Kohli appeared in good form in the first innings of the Melbourne Test and believes the Indian star will be disappointed with his performances.

Meanwhile, former Australian white-ball captain Aaron Finch shared his thoughts on Kohli’s approach in the series, pointing out that Kohli often rises to the occasion under pressure. Finch believes that Kohli might be intentionally trying to create challenges for himself, seeking to put pressure on the opposition and forcing a response. Finch noted that Kohli appeared impressive during his first innings in Melbourne before a run-out, and like Clarke, he expects Kohli to come back strong.

With the fifth and final Test match at the Sydney Cricket Ground scheduled to begin on January 3, India will hope that Kohli finds his form as they trail 2-1 in the five-match series. Both Clarke and Finch have emphasized the quality of Australia’s bowling attack, but also believe that Kohli’s return to top form is crucial for India’s chances.
