Medanta’s NICU Ambulance: A Lifeline for Tiny Fighters

Lucknow, 31 August, 2024: In a critical moment, the availability of Medanta Hospital’s specialized NICU ambulance was crucial in saving the life of a newborn suffering from a rare and life-threatening condition, Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension (PPHN). This state-of-the-art mobile intensive care unit proved to be a lifesaver, providing the necessary care during a desperate journey from Gorakhpur to Lucknow.

PPHN is a severe condition characterized by high blood pressure in the lungs of newborns, which prevents oxygen-rich blood from circulating effectively. Dr. Aakash Pandita, Director of Neonatology & Child Development Center at Medanta, explained, “PPHN occurs when the blood vessels in a newborn’s lungs fail to open up properly, resulting in reduced oxygenation and symptoms like bluish skin and heart failure.” This complex disorder occurs at a rate of 0.5 to 6 per 1000 live births, with boys having a higher risk than girls. The overall mortality remains high, ranging between 7% and 39%. The condition can arise due to factors like premature birth, respiratory distress syndrome, and infections, making early detection and specialized treatment vital for survival.

When Sania Sultana’s newborn son, Tashif, began struggling to breathe just days after birth, his parents, Sania and Tabish Khan, faced an urgent need for advanced medical care. Despite being placed on a ventilator, Tashif’s condition deteriorated, necessitating immediate transfer to a facility capable of providing specialized neonatal care. However, finding an appropriate ambulance equipped to handle such a delicate situation was a significant challenge.

The family’s hope was restored when they learned about Medanta’s NICU ambulance. This specialized vehicle, staffed with experienced medical professionals and equipped with cutting-edge technology, provided the critical support needed during the transfer. “The NICU ambulance was our only hope,” said Tabish Khan. “Other ambulances refused to take our baby due to his critical state, but Medanta’s team offered the specialized care required for the journey.”

Upon arrival at Medanta Hospital, Tashif’s condition took a turn for the worse, resulting in cardiac arrest. The hospital’s expert team acted swiftly, performing CPR and administering life-saving treatments, including inhaled nitric oxide (iNO), essential for managing PPHN. Dr. Pandita emphasized the importance of this treatment, noting, “Inhaled nitric oxide helps relax the blood vessels in the lungs, improving oxygen flow and reducing the strain on the heart. It’s treatment of choice for babies with PPHN but is available at limited NICUs in the country.”
Tashif’s recovery was a lengthy process, involving intensive care that included multiple blood transfusions and seizure management. After several weeks in the NICU, he began to stabilize, showcasing the resilience of the tiny fighter. “We can’t express our gratitude to Dr. Pandita and the Medanta team,” Tabish expressed. “The NICU ambulance and their expertise saved our son’s life. It’s a miracle.”

This case underscores the indispensable role of specialized neonatal care and the critical importance of having a well-equipped NICU ambulance available. For vulnerable newborns, timely and appropriate interventions can make the difference between life and death. Medanta’s NICU ambulance not only provided a lifeline for Tashif but also highlighted the need for investment in advanced neonatal transport and care facilities.
