Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee met with her party’s legislators in the Assembly, where she firmly stated that the results of the Delhi elections would have no impact on the upcoming Bengal Assembly elections next year. During an internal meeting ahead of the Assembly budget session, Banerjee assured Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLAs that they would secure a two-thirds majority independently.
“We will come to power with a two-thirds majority on our own. Congress holds no relevance here. We will secure victory on our own,” Mamata Banerjee declared, emphasizing the TMC’s political dominance in the state.
‘TMC Alone is Enough to Challenge BJP’
Banerjee asserted that the Trinamool Congress is strong enough to take on the BJP in Bengal. “Next year, TMC will return to power with more than a two-thirds majority,” she proclaimed. She also dismissed the role of Congress in the state’s political landscape, reinforcing that the BJP’s challenge could be met solely by the TMC.
Further, Banerjee pointed out that in Haryana, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) did not support Congress, and likewise, Congress did not extend help to AAP in the recent Delhi elections.
‘AAP and Congress Together Could Have Changed the Outcome’
Sources indicate that Mamata Banerjee acknowledged that a different outcome might have been possible if both parties had collaborated. A TMC legislator from Nadia district stated, “Congress securing nearly 5% of the votes had an impact on the results. If Congress had shown more flexibility and entered an electoral agreement with AAP, the outcome could have been different.”
The legislator further noted that AAP also refrained from supporting Congress in Haryana. He opined that if both allies had contested elections together, the BJP might not have returned to power in Haryana.
As the Bengal Assembly elections approach, Banerjee’s statements reaffirm her confidence in TMC’s ability to secure a dominant position in the state’s political landscape.
