Lucknow: Senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer and Lucknow Police Commissioner Amarendra Singh Sengar is expected to be promoted to the rank of Director General (DG) ahead of schedule following the appointment of senior IPS officer Sujeet Pandey as Director of the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA) in Hyderabad.
Pandey formally assumed charge at the country’s premier police training institution on July 15, creating a vacancy at the Director General level in the Uttar Pradesh Police. The development is expected to expedite Sengar’s elevation, with an official notification from the state government anticipated in the coming days.
Prior to this vacancy, Sengar’s promotion was expected only after the retirement of senior IPS officer Ashok Mutha Jain at the end of August. However, the reshuffle in the state’s senior police leadership has advanced the promotion timeline by more than a month.
A 1995-batch IPS officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre, Sengar has nearly three decades of policing experience across operational, investigative and administrative assignments. Since June 2024, he has been serving as the Commissioner of Police, Lucknow, where he has overseen law and order, crime prevention, technology-driven policing and public safety initiatives in the state capital.
Over the course of his career, Sengar has held several key positions, including Additional Director General, Lucknow Zone, Inspector General (Law and Order), Inspector General, Varanasi Zone, and Deputy Inspector General in Gorakhpur, Moradabad and Basti Ranges. He has also served as Superintendent of Police and Senior Superintendent of Police in multiple districts across Uttar Pradesh.

His experience extends to central deputation as well. Between 2017 and 2019, Sengar served as Officer on Special Duty to the Union Home Minister. He has also held senior positions as Inspector General in the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), gaining expertise in border management, internal security and disaster response.
Known for his experience in law and order management, intelligence coordination, criminal investigation and strategic policing, Sengar has also completed the prestigious 62nd National Defence College (NDC) Course in 2022, further strengthening his credentials for senior leadership roles.
With the Director General-level vacancy now available, Sengar’s promotion is widely expected as part of the Uttar Pradesh Police’s ongoing senior-level administrative restructuring. The appointment, however, will take effect only after the state government issues a formal promotion order.
