New Delhi: Ghana secured a dramatic 1-0 victory over Panama in their opening Group L match of the FIFA World Cup 2026, with Caleb Yirenkyi scoring a stoppage-time winner at Toronto Stadium on Wednesday.
The tightly contested encounter appeared destined for a draw before Yirenkyi produced a moment of brilliance deep into injury time to earn Ghana all three points.
Panama created several promising opportunities, particularly in the first half. Midfielder Amir Murillo delivered a low cross that found striker Cecilio Waterman near the edge of the box, but Ghana substitute goalkeeper Benjamin Asare reacted sharply to deny the effort. Earlier, Jovani Ramos squandered another excellent chance when he sent a rebound over the crossbar after Asare had made an initial save.
Panama continued to threaten after the break and came close to taking the lead when Cristian Martínez broke into the penalty area, only to rush his finish and send the ball wide.

As the match entered stoppage time, Ghana found the breakthrough. Thomas Asante delivered a precise pass from the left flank to Yirenkyi, who unleashed a powerful strike from just outside the box. The shot flew into the net, sparking celebrations among the Ghanaian players and supporters.
The late goal proved decisive, giving Ghana a valuable opening victory and an early advantage in the race for qualification from Group L.
