Lucknow: The historic Brown Hall of King George’s Medical University (KGMU) came alive with cultural pride as the institution celebrated the eve of Gujarat Sthapna Divas, marking the formation of Gujarat on May 1, 1960.
The event was graced by Vice-Chancellor Prof Soniya Nityanand, who highlighted the importance of embracing India’s diverse cultural heritage. The programme began with a welcome address by Dean Student Welfare Prof Rashmi Kushwaha, setting the tone for an evening dedicated to unity and cultural appreciation.
A key highlight of the event was a tribute to eminent leaders from Gujarat who have played a pivotal role in shaping modern India. Speakers paid homage to icons such as Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Chancellor Anandiben Patel.
The programme also celebrated Gujarat’s vibrant cultural identity, with discussions highlighting traditions like Garba and the state’s reputation as a “growth engine” driven by entrepreneurship and innovation.
Addressing the gathering, Prof. Soniya Nityanand remarked, “Celebrating Gujarat Divas at KGMU reflects the spirit of ‘Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat’. It is important for students to draw inspiration from the country’s diverse cultural and leadership landscapes.”

Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof Apjit Kaur spoke about the colourful cultural traditions of Gujarat, while Dean, Allied and Health Care Sciences, Prof K K Singh recalled the contributions of Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Patel, urging students to emulate their ideals.
The event witnessed the presence of senior faculty members including Proctor Prof RAS Kushwaha, along with faculty, medical professionals, and students who actively participated in the celebration.
The evening concluded with a vote of thanks by Prof Bhaskar Agarwal, leaving the audience with a sense of patriotic pride and reinforcing the bond between the premier medical institution of Uttar Pradesh and the rich cultural legacy of Gujarat.
