IPS Reshuffle Likely in Uttar Pradesh; Police top brass could see a revamp

Major IPS Reshuffle Likely in Uttar Pradesh; Lucknow Police Commissioner Among Officers Expected to Be Shifted

Lucknow: A major reshuffle of senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officers is expected in Uttar Pradesh in the coming weeks, with Lucknow Police Commissioner Amrendra Kumar Sengar among the officers likely to be affected. The anticipated changes are linked to upcoming promotions, central deputations, and administrative preparations ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.

According to official sources, the transfer exercise is expected to begin after Director General of Fire Services Sujeet Pandey is relieved to take up his new assignment as Director of the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy on central deputation. His departure is expected to clear the way for Amrendra Kumar Sengar’s promotion to the rank of Director General (DG), triggering a broader reshuffle across the state’s police hierarchy.

Sengar was originally expected to be promoted following the retirement of DG A. Mutha Jain on August 30. However, Sujeet Pandey’s early move to the Centre has accelerated the promotion process. Officials indicated that if no DG-rank officer returns to Uttar Pradesh from central deputation before then, Sengar’s elevation is almost certain.

Following A. Mutha Jain’s retirement, Ashok Singh, currently serving with the Uttar Pradesh Police Recruitment and Promotion Board, is also expected to be promoted to the DG rank from September 1.

The reshuffle is also expected to provide new postings to 28 officers recently promoted from the Provincial Police Service (PPS) to the IPS cadre. Several of them are likely to be appointed as district police chiefs. Deliberations on these postings are reportedly underway at the Director General of Police Headquarters.

Sources indicate that police leadership could change in districts including Sambhal, Bijnor, Unnao, Bulandshahr, Chitrakoot, and Lalitpur, among others.

In addition to promotions, the transfer exercise is expected to take into account Election Commission guidelines ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections. Officers who will have completed three years in a particular posting by March 31, 2027, are likely to be shifted before the election process begins.

Senior officers who may come under the transfer policy include Noida Police Commissioner Laxmi Singh, Varanasi Police Commissioner Mohit Agarwal, ADG Varanasi Zone Piyush Mordia, DIG Moradabad Range Muniraj G., Lucknow Deputy Commissioners of Police Kamlesh Dixit and Raveena Tyagi, Gonda SP Vineet Jaiswal, Kanpur Police Commissionerate officer Shravan Singh, Noida officer Ravi Shankar Nim, Lalitpur SP Mohammad Mushtaq, and Chitrakoot SP Arun Singh.

Several other IPS officers posted across the state—including Pramod (Varanasi), Atul Sharma II (Agra), Ravindra (Kanpur), Shruti Srivastava (Varanasi), Chirag Jain (Azamgarh), Shiva Singh (Kanpur Commissionerate), Amit Kumawat (Lucknow Commissionerate), Neetu (Varanasi Commissionerate), and Vikram Dahiya (Pilibhit)—are also expected to figure in the transfer list.

While the state government has not yet issued any official transfer orders, senior officials indicated that a comprehensive reshuffle is likely once the pending promotions and central deputation formalities are completed. The exercise is expected to strengthen the administrative setup and align police postings with operational and election-related requirements ahead of the 2027 Assembly polls.
