Indian Railways: Transforming Towards a World-Class Future in 2024

New Delhi: As part of its ambitious vision for a Viksit Bharat 2047, Indian Railways continues to evolve in 2024, driving the modernization of its network and infrastructure. With a keen focus on enhancing passenger experience, optimizing freight services, and integrating cutting-edge technologies, the railway system has firmly positioned itself as a key catalyst in the nation’s growth.

The year 2024 has witnessed significant strides in the development of modern stations, introduction of state-of-the-art trains, and the implementation of advanced safety systems. The ongoing drive toward sustainability further aligns Indian Railways with its green commitments while ensuring economic benefits through infrastructure growth and capacity building.

Enhancing Rail Track Infrastructure & Speed

To cater to the increasing demand for faster and more efficient rail services, Indian Railways has made substantial upgrades to its track infrastructure:

  • 6200 km of track has been renewed with new rails.
  • 6450 km of track has undergone complete renewal, ensuring better durability and safety.
  • 8550 sets of Turnouts have been renewed to improve the overall operational efficiency.

Moreover, the sectional speed has been raised to 130 km/h across 2000 km of tracks, covering critical routes including parts of the Golden Quadrilateral. Another 7200 km of track now operates at a speed of 110 km/h.

Project Engineering & Management Improvements

Indian Railways has also streamlined its procurement processes, resolving pending engineering department issues through the “Vivad Se Vishwas II” scheme, while introducing new procedures to fast-track project completions. This year, various powers for work tenders have been delegated to speed up project execution, enhancing efficiency across the board.

Further, four new modules have been introduced to manage railway infrastructure more effectively, including the opening of new lines, rebuilding bridges, and remodelling yards. The goal is to remove bottlenecks and ensure faster, more reliable train services across the nation.

Safety and Infrastructure Milestones

As part of its ongoing commitment to safety, Indian Railways has upgraded its safety systems. In 2024, efforts to eliminate manned level crossings led to the construction of 1024 Road Over Bridges (ROBs) and 718 manned level crossings were eliminated. Additionally, telecommunication systems like Wi-Fi and CCTV have been expanded, ensuring better connectivity and security for passengers.

Gati Shakti Multi-Modal Cargo Terminals

In line with the Gati Shakti initiative, the Railways has made notable strides in the development of Multi-Modal Cargo Terminals (GCT), with 354 locations identified, and 91 terminals commissioned by October 2024. These terminals are set to revolutionize logistics and support India’s growing industrial economy.

Electrification and Sustainability Goals

In 2024, Indian Railways has electrified 3,210 Rkms of track, bringing the electrified network to 97% of its broad-gauge tracks. These efforts are part of the Railways’ mission to become a Net Zero Carbon Emitter by 2030. As of November 2024, 487 MW of solar power and 103 MW of wind energy capacity have been installed, with plans to expand these renewable energy sources further.

New Train Services and Passenger Facilities

2024 has also seen the introduction of innovative new train services to meet growing demand:

  • 136 Vande Bharat Express trains now serve passengers across India, including 62 new services introduced in 2024 alone.
  • The Namo Bharat Rapid Rail, which began service between Ahmedabad and Bhuj in September, is a part of the government’s broader effort to enhance high-speed rail connectivity.
  • Amrit Bharat Express, offering non-AC sleeper and general coaches, has also expanded, with four new services introduced this year.

Special trains, including those for festivals like Holi, Diwali, and Chhath, have seen a sharp increase in numbers, with 13,523 trips operated during the year, ensuring that the increasing passenger demand is met.

Bharat Gaurav Tourist Trains

Another key development has been the success of the Bharat Gaurav Tourist Trains, which have taken passengers on a journey through India’s rich cultural and historical heritage. From January to December 2024, these trains have made 158 trips, carrying over 104,000 passengers, showcasing India’s diverse tourism potential.

Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Progress

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train project has made significant progress in 2024, with 243 km of viaduct construction completed, alongside the successful installation of steel bridges across rivers. The project promises to be a game-changer in high-speed rail travel, further enhancing connectivity between key economic hubs in India.

Record Infrastructure Expansion

In the first three quarters of 2024, Indian Railways achieved remarkable progress in expanding its network:

  • 3433 km of new lines, gauge conversions, and doubling have been commissioned.
  • 58 projects were sanctioned under the three major economic corridors: Energy, Mineral and Cement, High Traffic Density Routes, and Rail Sagar Corridors.

Looking Ahead

With its focus on speed, safety, sustainability, and passenger comfort, Indian Railways is well on its way to realizing its vision of becoming a world-class transportation network by 2047. By continually investing in technology, infrastructure, and customer service, Indian Railways is laying a robust foundation for India’s development, playing a vital role in the nation’s progress towards a Viksit Bharat.

As the railway system continues to modernize, it promises to be a key driver of economic growth, improving connectivity, promoting tourism, and creating jobs while reducing the environmental footprint of transport services across the country.
