Washibgton: Donald Trump has been in action mode since winning the US presidential election. Trump seems to have started making plans to corner China. In fact, Trump has chosen Republican Representative Mike Waltz as his National Security Advisor. Waltz is a retired Green Beret of the US Army, who has also been a prominent critic of China.
Waltz has been a colonel in the National Guard
Waltz, a loyalist of Trump, has also served as a colonel in the National Guard. He has been a strong critic of Chinese activity in the Asia-Pacific and has been emphasizing the need for the US to be prepared for a potential conflict in the region.
The National Security Advisor is a powerful position, which does not require Senate confirmation. Waltz will be responsible for briefing Trump on key national security issues and coordinating with various agencies.
Criticism of Biden and praise of Trump
Waltz publicly praised Trump’s foreign policy while criticizing the Biden administration for the disastrous withdrawal of its troops from Afghanistan in 2021. “Disruptors are often not good… Clearly a lot of people steeped in bad old habits in our national security establishment and certainly in the Pentagon need that disruption,” Waltz said during an event earlier this year.
Waltz has a long history in political circles
Waltz has a long history in Washington political circles. He was defense policy director for Defense Secretaries Donald Rumsfeld and Robert Gates and was elected to Congress in 2018. He is chairman of the House Armed Services subcommittee overseeing military logistics and is also on the Select Committee on Intelligence.
Has told plan to stop China’s activity
Waltz is also on the Republican China Task Force and has argued that the US military is not as prepared as it should be if there is a conflict in the Indo-Pacific region. In a book published earlier this year, “Hard Truths: Think and Lead Like a Green Beret,” Waltz laid out a five-part strategy to prevent war with China, including rapidly arming Taiwan, reassuring allies in the Pacific and modernizing planes and ships.
