Nithya Raman Makes History, Set to Become Los Angeles’ First Indian-American Mayor

Los Angeles: Nithya Raman, an urban planner of Indian origin, has scripted history in Los Angeles after defeating incumbent mayor Karen Bass in the mayoral election, according to the latest figures cited in the election report. Born in Kerala, Raman is set to become the first Indian-American and South Asian to lead the California city, marking a significant milestone for the Indian diaspora in the United States.

The election result signals a change in the political leadership of Los Angeles, America’s second-largest city. Raman’s campaign focused on key civic concerns, including affordable housing, homelessness, neighbourhood safety and improving municipal services.

Raman Wins With 52.70 Per Cent of Votes

According to the latest Los Angeles County figures cited in the report, Raman secured 460,772 votes, representing 52.70 per cent of the total. Bass received 413,519 votes, accounting for 47.30 per cent.

Following the result, Bass conceded defeat and congratulated Raman, expressing her willingness to facilitate a smooth transfer of responsibilities.

Raman acknowledged her predecessor’s public service and contribution to the city, signalling a cooperative approach towards the transition.

Journey From Kerala to American Politics

Born in Kerala, India, Raman moved to the United States with her family when she was six years old. She pursued her undergraduate education at Harvard University and subsequently earned a master’s degree in urban planning from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Before entering electoral politics, Raman worked extensively on community development and homelessness-related issues. She also co-founded the SELAH Neighborhood Homeless Coalition, an organisation focused on supporting homeless people and addressing challenges faced by local neighbourhoods.

Her background in urban planning and community activism helped establish her reputation as a politician focused on practical urban issues.

In 2020, Raman entered the Los Angeles City Council, becoming the first Asian-American woman and the first South Asian elected to the council.

Housing and Homelessness Among Key Priorities

Housing affordability and homelessness featured prominently in Raman’s mayoral campaign. Los Angeles continues to face serious challenges related to rising property costs, housing shortages and the growing need for support services for people without permanent accommodation.

She also highlighted improvements in basic neighbourhood infrastructure, including better street lighting, road repairs and more responsive civic administration.

Public safety and policing reforms were other important components of her campaign. Implementing these proposals will require coordination with the City Council, law enforcement agencies and various municipal departments.

Historic Victory, Major Responsibilities Ahead

Raman’s electoral success represents an important moment for Indian-American representation in US politics. Her journey from Kerala to the leadership of one of America’s most prominent cities reflects the growing influence of immigrant communities in local governance.

However, her administration will face considerable expectations. Addressing homelessness, improving public safety, making housing more affordable and strengthening municipal services will require effective policymaking and sustained coordination.

As Los Angeles prepares for a leadership transition, attention will focus on Raman’s governing team and the implementation of her campaign commitments.

Her victory has opened a new chapter in the city’s political history. The larger test will be whether her administration can translate its promises into tangible improvements in the lives of Los Angeles residents.
