New Delhi: Congo produced one of the early surprises of the FIFA World Cup 2026, holding a strong Portugal side to a 1-1 draw in their Group K opener in Houston, Texas. The African nation earned a valuable point thanks to a crucial first-half stoppage-time goal from Yoane Wissa, frustrating Cristiano Ronaldo-led Portugal.
Portugal made a dream start when João Neves rose inside the box to head home a cross from Pedro Neto in the sixth minute, giving the European side an early advantage. Roberto Martínez’s men dominated possession and looked on course for victory, but Congo gradually grew into the contest.
Just before halftime, Wissa connected with a precise cross from Arthur Masuaku and headed home the equaliser. The goal marked a historic moment, as it was Congo’s first World Cup goal in 52 years and only their second appearance at football’s biggest tournament since 1974.
Portugal pushed for a winner after the break, with veteran captain Cristiano Ronaldo creating dangerous opportunities but unable to convert. João Cancelo also had a goal ruled out for offside, while Congo’s defence stood firm against repeated attacks.

After the match, Portugal coach Roberto Martínez admitted his team lost control after taking the lead, allowing Congo to gain confidence. João Neves called for improvement in the matches ahead, while Congo coach Sébastien Desabre praised his players’ commitment and discipline.
Wissa, named among Congo’s standout performers, said the result reflected the team’s hard work and determination against one of the tournament’s strongest sides.
The draw leaves both teams with a point as they look ahead to their remaining Group K fixtures.
