Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh has recorded a major expansion in urban sanitation infrastructure under the Yogi Adityanath government, with the number of individual household toilets constructed under the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban crossing the nine-lakh mark.
According to government figures, Uttar Pradesh had 309,924 individual household latrines (IHHLs) in urban areas by 2017-18. Since then, construction has accelerated significantly, with the total number of household toilets now reaching 900,113.
The figures indicate that nearly 5.90 lakh additional household toilets have been built since 2017-18, expanding access to safe and dignified sanitation facilities for urban families across the state.
The expansion has also been accompanied by a significant increase in public sanitation infrastructure. Under Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 1.0, more than 10,000 community and public toilets and urinal blocks have been constructed in urban areas of Uttar Pradesh, creating over 70,000 sanitation seats.
These facilities have helped improve access to sanitation in high-footfall locations such as markets, bus stations, railway stations, commercial areas and other public spaces.
The government has continued to expand public sanitation infrastructure under the next phase of the urban cleanliness mission. Since 2024-25, a total of 3,727 additional public sanitation seats have been added, comprising 2,623 public toilet seats and 1,104 urinal seats.
Officials said the expansion of both household and public sanitation facilities is aimed at strengthening the overall urban sanitation system and improving the quality of life for residents.
Anuj Kumar Jha, Secretary in the Urban Development Department, said the state government is undertaking large-scale efforts to improve sanitation facilities across urban Uttar Pradesh through the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban.
He said the government’s objective extends beyond merely constructing toilets and focuses on ensuring that every eligible household has access to safe, clean and dignified sanitation facilities.
The expansion of household toilets, community facilities and public sanitation infrastructure marks a significant step in strengthening cleanliness and sanitation services across Uttar Pradesh’s rapidly growing urban centres.
