Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh government, led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, is moving to digitise the sugarcane transportation system to safeguard farmers’ interests and bring greater transparency to the supply chain.
Under the proposed system, all vehicles transporting sugarcane from procurement centres to sugar mill gates will be monitored through GPS-based real-time tracking. A central control room will keep a 24-hour watch on the movement of sugarcane-laden vehicles.
The initiative, being taken by the Sugarcane Development Department, is aimed at streamlining transportation and preventing unnecessary delays, unauthorised stoppages and possible irregularities during transit.
The Sugarcane Commissioner said the department is considering a Vehicle Tracking System to provide live monitoring of vehicles carrying sugarcane. Officials at the central control room will be able to track vehicle movements throughout the transportation process.
The digital monitoring mechanism is expected to improve transparency in the sugarcane supply chain and ensure that vehicles follow their designated routes and reach mills within the stipulated time.
One of the key objectives is to ensure that sugarcane reaches the mills within 24 hours of harvesting. Officials said delays after harvesting can cause sugarcane to lose moisture when exposed to heat and air, potentially affecting its natural weight and ultimately causing financial losses for farmers.
With time-bound transportation and real-time monitoring, the government aims to preserve the freshness and natural weight of sugarcane while reducing the possibility of weight-related deductions.
The initiative is being viewed as an important step towards modernising sugarcane logistics through digital technology. By combining GPS tracking with centralised monitoring, the government expects to make transportation more accountable and efficient.
Officials said the system will directly benefit sugarcane farmers by helping ensure timely delivery of their produce and protecting them from avoidable losses caused by delays in transportation.
