Lucknow: Acting on directions of the High Court to improve traffic management along the Polytechnic-Kamta-Chinhat corridor, Lucknow Traffic Police launched a major enforcement drive on Thursday, issuing 3,675 challans and impounding 59 vehicles in a single day.
The crackdown was carried out at Polytechnic, Kamta, Chinhat and several other major intersections and busy roads across the city. The action targeted not only unauthorised and commercial vehicles but also motorists violating basic traffic rules, including illegal parking, driving on the wrong side and riding without helmets.
The highest number of challans—1,665—were issued to motorists found riding without helmets. Another 1,061 challans were issued for parking vehicles in no-parking zones.
Police also issued 727 challans for wrong-side driving, while 268 challans were issued for defective number plates. A further 265 challans were issued for driving without valid insurance and 205 for carrying three people on two-wheelers.
Crackdown on Roadside Passenger Vehicles
The enforcement drive comes amid continuing efforts to address traffic congestion on the Polytechnic-Kamta-Chinhat route following High Court directions.
Traffic officials are particularly monitoring commercial and passenger vehicles that stop on roads to pick up passengers. Unauthorised vehicle stands and indiscriminate roadside parking have also been identified as major contributors to congestion along the corridor.
Officials said enforcement alone would not provide a permanent solution. As part of a broader traffic-management exercise, a joint inspection of the Polytechnic-Chinhat corridor and adjoining major roads was conducted.
During the inspection, 153 locations were identified where improvements in traffic management are required. Officials assessed available road width, unauthorised parking, vehicle stands, traffic pressure at intersections and other factors contributing to congestion.
Action is being coordinated with the departments concerned to address these infrastructure and traffic-management issues.
Enforcement to Continue
DCP Traffic Ravina Tyagi said the campaign would not remain limited to August 13 and that enforcement against unauthorised passenger vehicles, wrong-side driving, illegal parking and roadside passenger loading would continue.
The Traffic Police, local police stations, Transport Department and other concerned agencies will conduct joint enforcement drives in the coming days.
Police have also appealed to commuters to avoid travelling in unauthorised or illegal vehicles and use designated public transport facilities. Motorists have been urged to wear helmets, drive on the correct side of the road and avoid parking in no-parking zones.
The latest drive highlights the police’s focus on combining strict enforcement with long-term traffic-management measures to reduce congestion and improve road safety in Lucknow.
