Bareilly: The Department of Sports at Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Rohilkhand University organised a series of traditional Indian games as part of the celebrations for the university’s 24th Convocation Ceremony, promoting the country’s rich sporting heritage among the younger generation.
The event was held at the university’s sports complex under the inspiration of the Governor of Uttar Pradesh and the guidance of the Vice-Chancellor. Children from the university campus enthusiastically participated in a range of indigenous games, including Kho-Kho, Gilli Danda, Marbles (Kancha), Tug of War, and Satoliya, displaying remarkable energy, sportsmanship, and teamwork.
The programme was inaugurated by the university’s Sports Secretary, Additional Sports Secretary, Campus Sports Secretary, and Assistant Sports Secretary. The competitions were conducted under the supervision of sports coaches Dharmendra Sharma, Randeep Singh (Athletics Coach), and Raju, ensuring smooth and successful execution of the event.
The initiative aimed to reconnect the younger generation with India’s traditional games, promote physical fitness, and foster values such as discipline, teamwork, and healthy competition. Organisers said such activities also help preserve India’s cultural heritage while encouraging children to lead active lifestyles.
Among those present were Registrar Mahendra Kumar Singh, Controller of Examinations Dr. Anil Kumar Yadav, Sports Secretary Prof. S.S. Bedi, Campus Sports Secretary Dr. Neeraj Kumar, Additional Sports Secretary Dr. Sandeep Kumar, Joint Sports Secretaries Dr. Ajit Singh and Dr. Vijay Singhal, Assistant Sports Secretaries Dr. Iram Naeem and Inderpreet Kaur, along with faculty members and staff of the Sports Department.
Concluding the programme, university officials applauded the enthusiastic participation of the children and emphasised that traditional Indian games are an integral part of the nation’s cultural legacy. They noted that such games help develop discipline, physical fitness, team spirit, and social harmony, and affirmed that the Sports Department would continue organising similar events in the future.
