Houston: Germany made a statement start to their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign, cruising to a commanding 7–1 victory over debutants Curaçao in their Group E opener at Houston Stadium. Powered by a brace from Kai Havertz, the four-time champions showcased their attacking depth and tournament intent in a one-sided encounter.
The match also saw goals from Felix Nmecha, Nico Schlotterbeck, Jamal Musiala, Nathaniel Brown, and Deniz Undav, as Germany overwhelmed their opponents with relentless pressure and clinical finishing.
Early Exchange Before Germany Take Control
Germany struck early when Felix Nmecha finished off a well-worked move in the 6th minute, linking up neatly with Florian Wirtz to open the scoring.
However, Curaçao briefly stunned the favourites when Livano Comenencia capitalised on a defensive lapse to level the score at 1–1 in the 21st minute, marking a historic moment for the debutants.
That joy was short-lived. Nico Schlotterbeck restored Germany’s lead with a well-placed header from a corner in the 38th minute, shifting momentum firmly back in favour of the European giants.
Havertz Seals First-Half Dominance
Just before halftime, Kai Havertz converted a penalty in stoppage time after Felix Nmecha was brought down inside the box, giving Germany a 3–1 lead at the break and full control of the match.
Second-Half Onslaught
Germany wasted no time after the restart. Jamal Musiala extended the lead within two minutes of the second half, finishing a precise pass from Joshua Kimmich.
From there, the match turned into a showcase of Germany’s attacking variety. Nathaniel Brown added a spectacular volley in the 68th minute on his World Cup debut, followed by Deniz Undav making it 6–1 ten minutes later.
Havertz completed his brace in the closing stages, scoring his second goal in the 88th minute to seal a comprehensive 7–1 victory.

Nagelsmann Pleased with Strong Start
Head coach Julian Nagelsmann expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance, praising their response after Curaçao’s brief equaliser and highlighting the importance of starting the tournament with confidence.
He also acknowledged Curaçao’s effort, noting that even debutants showed moments of quality despite the scoreline.
Neuer’s Historic Milestone Appearance
Veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer also made history by appearing in what is believed to be his fifth World Cup, becoming one of the oldest players to feature in the tournament at 40 years and 79 days.
Neuer reflected on the joy of playing at the highest level again, praising team unity and recalling his first World Cup appearance in 2010 with Germany.
Mixed Emotions for Curaçao
Despite the heavy defeat, Curaçao found a historic moment through Livano Comenencia’s goal, the nation’s first in a World Cup finals appearance. The midfielder described scoring on the world stage as the fulfilment of a lifelong dream.
A Statement Victory
For Germany, the win was more than just three points—it was a powerful reminder of their attacking strength and squad depth. For Curaçao, it was a harsh but historic introduction to football’s biggest stage.
Germany now turn their attention to the next group fixture, buoyed by momentum and a statement opening performance.
