Washington: Iran produced a spirited comeback to secure a 2–2 draw against New Zealand in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Group G encounter in Los Angeles, denying the All Whites a historic first World Cup victory.
Despite a brilliant brace from Elijah Just, Iran twice fought back to earn a point, keeping Group G tightly balanced after Egypt also drew with Belgium earlier in the day.
New Zealand Start Bright with Early Lead
New Zealand made a dream start when Elijah Just struck a superb first-time volley in the 7th minute, finishing a well-worked move involving skipper Chris Wood.
The All Whites looked sharp in the opening phase, pressing high and creating early momentum against a well-organised Iranian side.
However, Iran gradually grew into the game, especially after the first hydration break, which shifted momentum in their favour.
Iran Strike Back Before Half-Time
Iran levelled the score through Ramin Rezaeian, who reacted quickest inside the box to make it 1–1.
The Iranian attack, led by Mehdi Taremi, also came close to taking the lead when a long-range effort struck the post, while another goal was ruled out for offside.
Despite New Zealand’s resilience, Iran finished the first half strongly, pushing forward with greater intensity.

Just Restores Lead, Iran Respond Again
New Zealand regained the advantage early in the second half when Elijah Just completed his brace, combining neatly with Chris Wood before finishing confidently past Iran goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand.
But Iran refused to back down. Rezaeian turned provider with a precise cross, and Mohammad Mohebbi rose well to head home off the post, making it 2–2 and setting up a tense final phase.
Balanced Contest Till the End
Both sides continued to push for a winner in an evenly matched contest, with New Zealand registering 14 attempts on goal compared to Iran’s 17.
However, neither team could find a decisive breakthrough, as defensive discipline and goalkeeping kept the score level.
A Point That Keeps Group Open
The draw ensures Group G remains finely poised, with both Iran and New Zealand sharing points alongside Egypt and Belgium after their own draw earlier in the group.
For Iran, the result highlights their attacking strength and fighting spirit, while New Zealand will take encouragement from a performance that brought them within touching distance of their first-ever World Cup victory.
