Kashmir Scientists Achieve Breakthrough, Enable Cultivation of Rare High-Value Morel Mushrooms

New Delhi: In a major scientific breakthrough, researchers from Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST) have successfully cultivated rare and highly prized morel mushrooms under controlled conditions, paving the way for farmers to grow the expensive delicacy commercially.

Known as morels or Morchella—locally referred to as “Gucchi”—these mushrooms typically grow naturally in high-altitude forests for a brief seasonal window. Due to their rarity, unique flavor, nutritional value, and medicinal properties, morels command premium prices ranging from ₹15,000 to ₹40,000 per kilogram in domestic and international markets.

According to SKUAST Vice-Chancellor Nazir Ahmad Ganai, the development could significantly transform the agricultural landscape of Jammu and Kashmir. The research team spent over five years studying the mushroom, collecting samples from more than 1,000 wild locations and analyzing soil, climate, and environmental conditions.

Out of ten identified varieties, scientists successfully cultivated three under controlled environments. Some varieties were grown in polyhouses, while others were developed in open conditions during trial phases conducted in districts such as Baramulla, Anantnag, and Srinagar.

Researchers noted that cultivating morels is particularly challenging, as the fungus requires precise moisture levels, temperature control, and specific soil compositions. Different varieties also demand varying environmental conditions. After years of experimentation, scientists managed to replicate these parameters in a controlled setting. A patent application has also been filed for the technique.

Experts believe this innovation could usher in a new era for the region’s agri-economy. With strong global demand for morels, farmers could significantly boost their incomes. The breakthrough is also expected to create new employment opportunities and strengthen the bio-economy in the region.
