AI Not a Substitute for Doctors, but a Tool to Enhance Their Capabilities: Experts

Lucknow: A Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme and hands-on workshop on Artificial Intelligence and Simulation in Critical Care was organized in Lucknow to discuss the growing role of advanced technology in modern medical practice. The event brought together medical professionals and experts who highlighted how emerging technologies are transforming healthcare delivery and clinical decision-making.

The programme was inaugurated by Prof. Sonia Nityanand, Vice Chancellor of King George’s Medical University (KGMU), Lucknow. On the occasion, Prof. Monika Kohli, Head of the Department of Anaesthesiology, along with Dr. Sohan Lal, Dr. Ratan Nirmal, Dr. Leena Tiwari and other senior faculty members shared their insights on the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and simulation techniques in critical care.

Experts explained that AI-based systems can significantly assist doctors in areas such as disease prediction, real-time data analysis, and rapid decision-making during emergency situations. By analyzing large volumes of patient data and monitoring vital parameters more precisely, these technologies help clinicians provide more accurate and timely treatment.

During the workshop, special emphasis was placed on simulation-based training, which enables doctors to practice complex clinical procedures in controlled environments before applying them in real-life situations. Specialists noted that such training improves response efficiency, teamwork and patient safety in critical care settings.

The speakers also highlighted that AI can help standardize treatment protocols and improve the quality of care by minimizing errors and supporting evidence-based decisions.

However, experts clarified that Artificial Intelligence cannot replace doctors. Instead, it should be viewed as a supportive tool that enhances clinical capabilities and assists physicians in making informed decisions.

They emphasized that the effective use of AI in healthcare should go hand-in-hand with continuous training, research and skill development, ensuring that technology strengthens the healthcare system while keeping medical professionals at the center of patient care.
