Tehran | Amid rising regional tensions, the Iranian government has reaffirmed its commitment to avoiding conflict while continuing to strengthen national defense capabilities. Speaking at a weekly press briefing in Tehran, government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani said the administration is managing what she described as “extraordinary external pressures” with a strategy centered on stability and restraint.
Diplomacy as the Primary Approach
According to statements reported by the Islamic Republic News Agency, Mohajerani emphasized that diplomacy remains Iran’s preferred path in dealing with international challenges. She noted that multiple state institutions are engaged in efforts aimed at reducing tensions and maintaining calm despite ongoing geopolitical complexities.
“The government continues to prioritize dialogue over confrontation,” she stated, explaining that diplomatic engagement and strategic deterrence are being pursued simultaneously as complementary elements of national policy.
She added that negotiations are conducted with caution to ensure that Iran’s sovereignty and core national interests are safeguarded throughout any diplomatic process.
Reinforcing Defensive Preparedness
While underscoring Iran’s preference for peaceful solutions, the spokesperson also highlighted recent military exercises as evidence of the country’s preparedness. She said that strengthening deterrence capabilities is essential to prevent miscalculations that could threaten national security.
“Our armed forces remain fully prepared, and our diplomatic teams are actively engaged,” Mohajerani said, stressing that defense readiness does not contradict diplomatic outreach but instead reinforces it.
Officials, she added, are closely monitoring developments across the region and remain prepared to respond to potential security challenges, even as they seek to prevent escalation.
Addressing Domestic Protests
The press conference also touched upon recent student-led protests at universities. Mohajerani acknowledged students as active members of society with the right to voice concerns. However, she emphasized that demonstrations should respect national symbols and religious values.
She provided an update on a fact-finding committee established to review unrest that occurred in January. According to her remarks, the committee continues its work, examining various issues including the status of detained individuals.
Authorities are working through legal and institutional channels to address concerns raised during the protests, she said.
Call for Constructive Dialogue
Mohajerani described dialogue as the most effective means of resolving internal tensions. She expressed appreciation for the cooperation of the ministries of science and health, along with university administrators and faculty members, in facilitating the reopening of campuses.
The government, she concluded, remains focused on maintaining social stability while navigating both domestic concerns and external pressures.
