New Delhi | Former India pacer and JioStar cricket expert Varun Aaron has stressed the importance of freedom and self-expression for India’s Under-19 cricketers as they prepare for the ICC U-19 Men’s ODI World Cup 2026, scheduled to be held in Zimbabwe and Namibia.
Speaking on the JioStar show Follow The Blues, Aaron highlighted that the junior level is a crucial phase in a cricketer’s development, where confidence and natural instincts matter more than rigid expectations or results. With India eyeing a historic feat of winning three ICC titles in a single calendar year, the spotlight on the U-19 side has intensified.
According to Aaron, pressure exists at every level of competitive cricket, starting as early as the Under-14 stage, but the emphasis in age-group cricket must remain on allowing players to express themselves freely. He noted that the coaching staff working with the current U-19 squad is focused on encouraging fearless cricket and helping players showcase their natural abilities rather than burdening them with outcome-driven thinking.

Aaron underlined that the Under-19 phase is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for young players and should be treated as a platform for learning and growth. He added that the World Cup stage should not change their mindset but instead allow them to stay true to their individual playing styles.

As India’s next generation gears up for the global tournament, the message from the former international fast bowler is clear: success at the junior level begins with confidence, freedom, and the courage to play one’s own game.
