Army Hospital Performs India’s First 3D Flex Aqueous Angiography with iStent, Sets New Benchmark in Glaucoma Care

New Delhi: In a major breakthrough for ophthalmic care in India, the Army Hospital (Research & Referral), Delhi Cantt, has successfully performed the country’s first-ever 3D Flex Aqueous Angiography combined with iStent implantation, marking a significant advancement in the treatment of glaucoma.

The pioneering procedure was carried out by the Ophthalmology Department using a stand-mounted Spectralis imaging system along with a state-of-the-art 3D operating microscope, integrating high-definition imaging with minimally invasive surgical precision. With this achievement, the Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS) have positioned themselves at the cutting edge of global glaucoma treatment.

Glaucoma remains one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness worldwide, often progressing silently until advanced stages. The newly adopted technique enables real-time visualisation of aqueous humour outflow pathways, allowing surgeons to identify functional drainage channels during surgery and tailor treatment with unprecedented accuracy.

The use of 3D Flex Aqueous Angiography in conjunction with iStent, a minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) device, represents a first-of-its-kind integration in India. This approach enhances intraoperative decision-making, improves surgical outcomes, and offers patients better long-term control of intraocular pressure.

Medical experts note that this innovation sets a new national benchmark in glaucoma management, reducing surgical trauma while maximising visual preservation. Beyond its clinical significance, the milestone holds strategic importance for the Armed Forces, reinforcing efforts to protect the vision, health, and operational readiness of service personnel.

With this achievement, Army Hospital (Research & Referral) continues to strengthen India’s reputation for advanced medical innovation and excellence in specialised healthcare delivery.
