New Delhi: India and Canada may soon witness a major shift in their trade dynamics as Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand arrived in New Delhi for an official visit. The trip is being seen as a fresh attempt to reset ties that faced turbulence in recent years, especially under the tenure of former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Political experts in Canada believe that this visit marks the beginning of a more pragmatic and business-focused approach by Ottawa. Commenting on the development, Canadian political analyst Clyde Nichols noted that under Trudeau, ideology often overshadowed economic cooperation, not just with India but with several other countries. However, with Mark Carney expected to take a different route, experts foresee a shift towards practical engagement and mutual benefit.
Nichols also pointed to the recent friendly meeting between Mark Carney and former U.S. President Donald Trump, which has revived hopes of stronger North American trade coordination. He expressed optimism that similar warmth could be extended to India, opening the door for deeper economic cooperation.
On global security, Nichols highlighted that the U.S. recently designated Antifa as an international terrorist organization, calling it a “positive step.” He said if Canada follows a similar firm stance on extremist elements, it would improve security coordination with key partners including India and the U.S.

Analysts believe that strengthening trade ties with India could become a priority for Canada as it looks to diversify beyond traditional markets.
With geopolitical shifts and leadership changes in Ottawa, Anita Anand’s visit could lay the foundation for a new era in India–Canada trade relations. All eyes are now on the diplomatic discussions set to take place in the coming days.
