Bangladesh Faces Worsening Poverty, Awami League Criticizes Government

Dhaka: The Awami League on Saturday criticized the Bangladeshi government, claiming that while ordinary citizens struggle to survive amid a deepening economic downturn, more than 10,000 new millionaires have emerged in just the last eight to ten months.

According to the party, Bangladesh’s economy is in severe recession, with unemployment exceeding 8% and poverty affecting around 28% of the population. Hundreds of factories have shut down, foreign investment remains minimal, and approximately 2.6 million people have lost their jobs.

The common people are increasingly burdened by rising prices of essential goods, further straining their livelihoods. Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Bank reported that as of June 2025, the total number of millionaire accounts reached 127,336, with 10,928 new millionaires emerging in the past eight to ten months alone.

The Awami League highlighted that 87% of these new millionaires are under 30 years old, and over 2,000 have not yet completed their formal education. The party questioned the source of their wealth, asking how such fortunes are being amassed while ordinary citizens face worsening economic hardships.
