Antwerp – Reeling from four consecutive defeats, the Indian men’s hockey team faces a must-win scenario as they prepare to take on a formidable Australian side in the FIH Pro League on Saturday. A victory is critical if India hopes to stay in contention for a top-three finish and keep their title hopes alive.
India’s European campaign has been disappointing so far, with back-to-back losses against Olympic champions Netherlands in Amstelveen (1-2 and 2-3), followed by defeats in both fixtures against Argentina. These results have left India with 15 points from 12 matches, placing them fifth on the table.
Captain Harmanpreet Aims for a Turnaround
Indian captain Harmanpreet Singh, who missed the previous match against Argentina due to a finger injury, emphasized the high stakes of the upcoming match.
“A win against Australia is crucial. It will not only give us key points but also restore our momentum,” said Harmanpreet. “Some of our recent matches have been close, but we couldn’t finish them in our favour. We’re determined to change that.”
India’s struggles have been apparent in converting penalty corners and closing out tight games. Against the Netherlands, the team failed to capitalize on scoring opportunities, while lapses in the dying moments cost them dearly. Their defensive performance against Argentina was also underwhelming, with India earning just three penalty corners compared to Argentina’s eight.
No Room for Errors Against Australia
Facing a strong and experienced Australian side, India will need to deliver a flawless performance. Past mistakes, especially in penalty corner execution and defensive coordination, must be rectified.
The team will also look to draw inspiration from their victory over Australia at the Paris Olympics, hoping to replicate that success and reignite their campaign.
India’s European leg of the FIH Pro League concludes with two crucial matches against Belgium on June 21 and 22. A strong showing in these remaining fixtures will be key to regaining lost ground and finishing the season on a high.
