Mumbai: In the wake of its recent suspension due to cross-border tensions, the 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is now likely to resume in August, after India’s Test series in England concludes in early August. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the IPL Governing Council are working on finalizing a new schedule to complete the remainder of the tournament.
The decision to temporarily halt the IPL 2025 was made after explosion-like sounds were reported in Jammu, prompting blackouts in Pathankot, Amritsar, Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, and Chandigarh—all near Dharamsala, the venue where the PBKS vs DC match was abandoned. The situation escalated quickly, leading the BCCI to inform franchises of a temporary but indefinite suspension of the tournament.
According to sources close to the developments, 12 league-stage matches and four playoff games remain, and August has emerged as a likely window for the remainder of the matches. India’s tour of England, comprising five Tests, is set to begin on June 20 and end in the first week of August, opening up a potential slot for the IPL’s conclusion.

However, venue changes are expected. Originally, several remaining games were scheduled in Dharamsala, Ahmedabad, and Jaipur, all in or near border regions. With heightened security concerns, the BCCI is now likely to relocate matches to safer zones in the southern and eastern parts of India.
Meanwhile, India’s scheduled white-ball series against Bangladesh and the Asia Cup (August-September) remain in uncertainty due to the ongoing geopolitical tensions. If those tours are called off, it could further clear the way for a more flexible IPL schedule in August.

There was speculation that the BCCI might compress the tournament across two or three venues, but considering the gravity of the situation, the decision was taken to completely pause the league until further notice.
The halt has particularly disappointed fans of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Punjab Kings (PBKS), with both teams showing rare form and title potential this season.
With over three months left before the potential restart, the BCCI is expected to announce revised fixtures and venues only after reassessing the security landscape. The board has maintained that the suspension is temporary, and the tournament will be completed in due course.
