₹5 Lakh Fine Imposed After Mayor, Municipal Commissioner Detect Major Irregularities at Sigra Commercial Complex

Varanasi: A major administrative action was taken in Varanasi after serious irregularities were discovered during an inspection of the under-construction Sigra Commercial Complex. Mayor Ashok Kumar Tiwari and Municipal Commissioner Himanshu Nagpal conducted a joint inspection of the project site on Friday and found several lapses related to construction quality, technical standards, and project execution.

Taking immediate cognizance of the shortcomings, the Municipal Commissioner directed officials to impose a penalty of ₹5 lakh on the concerned executing agency. The action came after authorities observed poor construction quality, lack of adherence to prescribed technical norms, and inadequate safety measures at the site.

According to officials, the Mayor and Municipal Commissioner expressed strong displeasure soon after arriving at the construction site in the Sigra area. Apart from the slow pace of work, the inspection revealed visible disorder and deficiencies in the execution of the project. Several sections of the construction were reportedly found below satisfactory standards.

Mayor Ashok Kumar Tiwari issued a stern warning to the officials and representatives of the executing agency, stating that negligence or compromise in quality would not be tolerated in any civic development project. He emphasized that municipal projects are directly linked to public convenience and therefore transparency, accountability, and high construction standards must remain the top priority.

During the inspection, Municipal Commissioner Himanshu Nagpal also carried out a detailed technical review of the ongoing construction work. The review reportedly identified multiple violations of prescribed norms and procedural guidelines by the executing agency.

Expressing dissatisfaction over the findings, Nagpal ordered the immediate imposition of a ₹5 lakh financial penalty and instructed officials to intensify monitoring of the project. He directed the engineering and supervisory teams to ensure regular inspections and swift action wherever quality deficiencies are noticed.

The Municipal Commissioner reiterated that projects funded through public money must maintain the highest standards of integrity and workmanship, adding that any irregularity in execution would invite strict administrative action.

Officials described the Sigra Commercial Complex as one of the city’s important urban infrastructure projects aimed at providing modern commercial facilities and boosting development in the area. The civic administration has prioritised the timely and quality-driven completion of the project.

During the inspection, authorities also reviewed the project layout, structural progress, and various technical aspects of the construction. Senior engineers, executive engineers, and other departmental officials were present on the occasion and briefed the Mayor and Municipal Commissioner about the current status and progress of the work.

The latest action by the Municipal Corporation signals a tougher approach toward accountability in public infrastructure projects, with officials making it clear that lapses in quality and execution will face immediate consequences.
