Varanasi: In a major step to enhance convenience and security for pilgrims, authorities in Varanasi are set to introduce a modern digital luggage locker system near key religious sites. The initiative aims to allow visitors to explore the city and perform rituals without worrying about their belongings.
A total of 225 smart lockers will be installed around the Kashi Vishwanath Temple and Dashashwamedh Ghat, two of the most visited locations in the city. These lockers will cater to a range of storage needs, from small items like mobile phones to larger luggage such as suitcases.
Municipal Commissioner Himanshu Nagpal said the lockers will be installed at strategic points including Dashashwamedh Plaza, Godowlia, Town Hall, and Beniabagh parking area. The facility will offer four categories—small, medium, large, and extra-large—ensuring flexibility for different types of goods.
The lockers will operate through a fully digital system, enabling users to access them via secure digital payment methods. This aligns with India’s broader push toward smart city infrastructure and cashless services.

Officials believe the initiative will significantly improve the overall pilgrim experience, especially for those visiting for Ganga snanor temple darshan. By eliminating concerns about theft or loss of belongings, visitors can immerse themselves fully in the spiritual and cultural richness of Kashi.
The project reflects the Uttar Pradesh government’s continued focus on blending tradition with technology, making one of the world’s oldest cities more accessible, safe, and visitor-friendly.
